A study published earlier this year has revealed that being raped or sexually assaulted in the United States comes with a hefty price tag as American women are shown to pay an average of $US 950 for hospital treatment following the perpetration of these crimes against them.
Published in the American Journal of Public Health, the study examined privately insured women with 1,355 instances of sexual assault or rape and found that these crimes cost an average of $6,737 in medical fees, with private insurers covering $5,789 of those fees, on average. In other words, victims were left to cover 14% of the bill for their own sexual assaults.
Lead author of the study, Ashley Tennessee from the Medical University of South Carolina points out that in terms of hospital fees for violent crimes, rape is an anomaly, “With other violent crimes, victims are not responsible for paying for the damage that results from the crime. Many people know sexual assault is an issue, but they’re often unaware that victims have to pay for associated medical charges.”
So, how the fuck is this happening? How is it possible that American women are being doubly victimised in such an appalling and blatant manner?
